Make your own hemp ointment: natural lubrication for care and first aid

Medicinal cannabis ointment and marijuana leaves and seeds

Hemp ointment has been a popular universal product since ancient times for its wide range of effects, which can be used in the treatment of injuries and for normal skin care. Find out the benefits of cannabis ointment and find out how you can legally make the most effective cannabis ointment that suits your needs at home.

What is cannabis ointment?

Hemp ointment is a topical preparation whose active ingredient is cannabinoids extracted from the hemp plant. The carrier for cannabinoids is the fats in which they dissolve, which guarantees an even and effective effectiveness.

An integral part of hemp ointment is beeswax, which ensures a solid consistency. It also helps to retain moisture in the skin and creates a protective barrier that protects it from external influences. Ointments are applied directly to the skin and can help with various local problems.

A treasure trove of ancient medicine and modern medicine

Cannabis has been used for its effects throughout human history. Its importance was noted in ancient China, Egypt, Greece and Rome. It was also popular in folk medicine in medieval Europe and the Middle East. Healers used it to treat wounds, treat skin diseases, and relieve inflammation and pain.

However, the effects of cannabis were only confirmed and understood in the second half of the 20th century, after scientists Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni discovered cannabinoids in 1964, which led to the identification of the endocannabinoid system. Although cannabis was classified as a drug and banned in the modern world at the beginning of the 20th century for its psychoactive effects, it is experiencing a renaissance in contemporary medicine. There are a number of different cannabis ointments on the market, but if you follow the regulations and procedures, you can legally and safely make medicinal cannabis ointment at home.

A universal helper

Thanks to its regenerative properties, hemp ointment is suitable for treating minor injuries, burns, blisters or as an aid in insect bites or stings. Its healing effects and moisturizing properties can be used for various dermatological problems: to nourish dry skin, eczema, and acne. Cannabinoids have anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential, making hemp ointment an ideal choice for sore muscles and joints.

Benefits and risks of homemade hemp ointment

Why should you consider including hemp ointment in your skin care and why does it make sense to make your own at home?

  • Hemp ointment has proven and confirmed medicinal effects and wide use.
  • Cannabis ointment is a natural alternative to conventional medicine that can be invasive.
  • If you make the ointment at home, you can be sure of its composition.
  • The strongest cannabis ointment is definitely the homemade one. You can prepare it to suit your skin specifically and specific needs.

When produced and used correctly, hemp ointment should not cause serious side effects. Although the risk of intolerance is small, it is not excluded, so make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients and  test on a small area of skin before using it for the first time.

Keep in mind that:

  • Before you find out what composition suits you, you will need to try different combinations.
  • Making homemade cannabis ointment costs time and energy.

Recipe for homemade hemp ointment

Before you start making your own cannabis ointment, think about what you want to use it for. According to this, you will choose the type of cannabis or isolate, carrier fats, other substances and the ratio of raw materials.

Selection of suitable ingredients

To make the ointment, it is necessary to use legal cannabis that does not contain THC or does not exceed its permitted content. Choose a variety according to the content of the desired cannabinoid. Cannabis flowers and leaves with a high CBD content are popular choices. CBD hemp ointment has therapeutic properties, is not psychoactive, is safe and legal.

Instead of flowers and leaves, isolates of individual cannabinoids can also be used to make the ointment, the advantage of which is that you can accurately measure the dose/content of the cannabinoid. The downside, however, is the loss of the entourage effect, as when using isolate, you are deprived of the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes found in flowers.

Think about what fat you use as a carrier ingredient, because it also brings its own benefits to the skin. You don't have to use just one oil, but you can combine them as you wish.

If you're creating an ointment for dry skin that needs intense hydration, coconut oil may suit you. For mature skin, which in addition to hydration also requires regeneration and firming, olive or argan oil is suitable, for example. For lubrication on problematic skin, choose oils that are easily and quickly absorbed, such as almond or jojoba. Popular supporting ingredients also include shea butter or lard.

Remember that each fat has a different viscosity, which can affect the amount of wax you'll need to keep the ointment solid. If you choose to use fats that have a solid state, such as coconut oil or shea butter, you won't need wax.

You can also add other ingredients to the ointment that can support the desired effect. These can be various herbs, essential oils or vitamins.

For example, calendula is ideal for an ointment that you want to use to treat injuries due to its healing effects. Chamomile and lavender have soothing effects and are suitable for ointments for irritated skin. Peppermint is a natural analgesic and provides a cooling effect and you will appreciate it in an ointment designed to relieve muscles and reduce itching.

You can also take advantage of the benefits of herbs in the form of essential oils. Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties and is therefore an ideal ingredient in products intended for the treatment of acne.

You can also mix vitamins into the ointment. Vitamin E is a popular ingredient in cosmetic products for its antioxidant, regenerative and moisturizing properties. It also acts as a preservative and extends the shelf life of the ointment.

What You'll Need

  • Cannabis flowers and leaves
  • Carrier grease / oil mixture
  • Depending on the viscosity of the fat, beeswax or vegetable wax
  • Herbs, essential oils and vitamins of your choice

  • Baking tray
  • Casserole and water bath bowl
  • Cloth or fine sieve
  • Clean containers for storing ointment

Procedure for making cannabis ointment

  1. Preparing cannabis: First, you need to decarboxylate the cannabis flowers, which means you heat them to activate the cannabinoids. Place the flowers on a baking tray and bake them at 115 °C for about 30 minutes.
  2. To make the oil base: Heat the carrier fats in a water bath and add the decarboxylated cannabis flowers to them. If you want to use other herbs, add them to the mixture at this stage. Heat the mixture over low heat for at least 2 hours to allow the cannabinoids and medicinal components of the herbs to be released. The temperature must not exceed 60 °C to preserve all the beneficial substances.
  3. Filtration: Filter the mixture through a cloth or fine sieve to remove the solid parts of the plant. The product obtained is the basis for your hemp ointment.
  4. Adding beeswax: Heat the mixture again in a water bath and add beeswax to it in a ratio of 1 part wax to 4 parts fat. Stir until the wax is completely dissolved. If you use fats that have a solid state, you can skip this step and not add wax. At this stage, you can add essential oils to the ointment. Vitamins are sensitive to temperature and are added to the cooled but still liquid ointment at the end, before pouring into containers.
  5. Filling into containers: Pour the finished ointment into prepared clean containers. Let it cool and harden.

Using homemade hemp ointment

Cannabis ointment usually has  a shelf life of between 6 and 12 months, depending on the quality and freshness of the ingredients used and storage. To keep the ointment effective for as long as possible, store it in a cool, dry and dark place, ideally in the refrigerator. Wash your hands before each use to prevent contamination of the ointment with bacteria or other impurities. The ointment is intended for external use. Apply a thin layer of ointment to the skin and massage gently so that the active ingredients are well absorbed. Use the ointment as needed, even several times a day.

Conclusion

Hemp ointment has been valued for its healing properties since ancient times. Even today, it finds widespread use as a natural remedy for treating injuries, skin problems, relieving inflammation and relieving pain.

Cannabis ointment is a legal effective natural alternative to synthetic drugs, which are often invasive, when regulations and procedures are followed. Making your own cannabis ointment is not difficult and the advantage is that you have control over the composition and raw materials, which can be combined as you need.
